We had a grabone for a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment...very cheap place to stay in Wellington for 5 people. We accidentally got out of the elevator on the 2nd floor, which looked like it had been abandoned years ago. When we found our room on the 4th floor, we were considerably happier. The place was not awful, but it could use painting and a clean. I'm sure it's fine for long term stayers who wouldn't mind cleaning the place up, but it wasn't something we felt like doing for a two night stay.
We stayed in a flat for a week @ $40/day during mid-January, which is a great deal for an indoor room with communal showers, kitchen and lounge. Honestly it is not the cleanest, but the staff was very friendly and they had a gym and a projector for movies. All in all a good stay.
Very close to the CBD (downtown).
We stayed at Ustay Urban Apartments on a weekend, having booked a deal at a great price.
Overall it was nice. Our studio rooms were tidy and the decor was interesting. Beds were really comfortable, location was perfect. Coffee and tea were provided which was a nice touch. We were on the 9th floor and it was quiet with great views over the city. The price was really good.
The kitchenette was small but well laid out, a bit odd though, nothing to actually cook with except a couple of mugs and a couple of glasses. Not much point in a kitchenette if you don't provide cooking equipment, but, we were planning to eat out anyway. It was nice to have tea and coffee there so we could make our own hot drinks, so we did use it for that. Instant coffee was the good stuff too. :)
Cleanliness could have been a bit better - the bathroom had a dirty-drain smell (needs some draino or something) and needed someone to do some cleaning in the corners (give your housekeepers some toothbrushes, nobody wants to see grime in the corners of the bathroom...).While the shower itself was clean, the glass shower doors were pretty dirty with soap scum. Window sills in the bedroom were moldy dirty and so was the internal glass of the windows. Room just had that 'needs a deep clean' feel. Not so bad that I couldn't stay in it, but...
The duvet cover had white stains over one side of it. I arrived late at night, so I just avoided sitting on that side of it, but they were obvious enough that it's weird that housekeeping missed them. I admit I'm pretty fussy with hotel cleanliness but clean bedding is a basic standard.
Overall: Yes I would stay again. Very good price, overall comfortable perfect location, friendly and helpful staff, if the cleaning issues were sorted it would have been an ideal budget stay for me. As it was it was acceptable.
Looked around for accommodation in central Wellington before travelling and uStay was a lucky find that I havent regretted since. It was way cheaper than other nearby and more well known places, especially on Willis Street. What we got was a cheap deal with all the comforts of home for our 10 day stay.
Room was totally self-contained. Ensuite bathroom included a large shower. The kitchenette included a stove top, microwave and small fridge, and also a decent amount of storage space. Room only came with cups etc but a 'catering pack' is available from reception for I think it was $20, which in basically a crate full of your missing kitchen equipment, pots and pans, plates and bowls, all the little kitchen utensils you'll need, also a decent knife with chopping board. Unusual as I'm used to everything being there already but it was still good value given that we got a special long term rate of about NZD$55-60. Perfect setup to cook your own meals, perfect for budget travellers.
The communal kitchen is large and spacious and is where you'll find stoves and ovens, for those who elect not to get room with kitchenette or have a craving that requires an oven. We killed time while we were cooking in the communal kitchen by checking out the other activities on the communal level, including pool table.
The decor is modern and bright and cheery. Great atmosphere, it feels more like a hotel than a hostel. When we stayed there the only time we saw other people were in the lifts and sometimes in the communal area, otherwise the place was nice and quiet. Reception is open late and down the road you can pretty much access public transport to anywhere as uStay is a walking distance to buses as well as the train station, where we caught our return trip to Auckland on the Overlander. Its also an easy walk to the city CBD, where you'll find shops, supermarkets, restaurants, Te Papa museum (free admission), Art Gallery, and other sights. Coordinate your sightseeing and travels at i-site, where you can get great maps of the city area and everything it has to offer. I honestly couldnt fault our stay there at all.
Firstly they cocked up booking and we couldn't fit into the room...they were very nice and found its a similar sized appartment we had booked as the other ones were fully booked...omg the appartment was disgusting..even the kids didn't want to sit down...stressed and tired after 8 hours of travel we found some where else...
To top it off the refund will take a week!! Tje place we stayed was the same price but way nicer!!
