Of course these units have the views, the location and are quite spacious but as usual with Byron Bay rentals you pay huge rentals and get very poor service and dodgy accommodation. We rented Unit 8 for three couples and one couple had the lovely room with the view but the other two had tiny rooms with single beds, no attempt to accomodate couples. There was rubbish in the drawers of one bedroom that the cleaner hadn't bothered to remove. The kitchen had minimal equipment and very few glasses etc. the furniture was hideous, grotty sticky couches and old rugs and tables. The weather was perishingly hot and I sweated the whole week with no relief indoors as there was not one room air conditioned and the flow through of air in the apartment was minimal. For the amount of money we paid we know that we will never come to Byron again for a summer holiday and definitely not these apartments. Not to mention the hideous crowds and constant traffic jams in the town and the constant traffic going past our apartment. Not a good place for a relaxing summer holiday.
Every year my family and a bunch of families go up to Byron Bay and we stay at the James Cook Apartments. We have the pleasure of staying number 11 and we enjoy it very much. The rooms are clean and safe and the main bedroom has amazing views. The apartment is just the right size not to big not to small. The kitchen is perfectly functioning kitchen. The location is perfect as it is just opposite and amazing beach.
My partner and i have recently returned from a short 4 day trip to Byron Bay where we stayed at the James Cook Apartments opposite Clarke's Beach.
We stayed in Unit 11, and as all apartments are rented out individually i am sure the interiors also differ greatly. I must say that the views and location of the apartments are fantastic. You can relax looking over the ocean and watch the sunset at night, yet are far away out of Byron to be out of the hussle and bussel of tourist season. You can hear the ocean from the apartment and see a 180 degree view of byron and the ocean from both downstairs and upstairs. it is a short walk to the beach and very convenient.
Although it didnt bother us greatly, as we were out enjoying the sites of Byron, the interior is very tired and desperately in need of a make over. The carpets were quite stained and old, both upstairs and downstairs, and the decorative pieces were old, dirty and very shabby. The bathrooms are terrible, with old mirrors that are chipping away at the edges and very dirty skylights. The red couches in the main living room were noticebly dirty, such that we put sheets over them to sit on them during our stay. It is however a good open plan apartment and there is a big kitchen, although also quite old and dated including the crockery and other facilities.
At first you are a bit shocked at the somewhat old and dirty state of the apartment for the price that you are paying, but the views and location really make you get over that initial thought. The gardens and surrounds are really lovely, although we were dissapointed to find out that the pool was undergoing maintenance for the summer break so was out of order, although we were not told that when we made the intial booking. the cleaners also left a big bag of dirty linen on our verandah which was not picked up for 2 days in to our stay, just small details that make a difference.
In all we had a fantastic break and found the apartments very relaxing with an amazing location and view, you will not be dissapointed when booking unit 11 as long as you do not expect a modern, very clean apartment. It is a great location, with great exteriors that we would recommend to those that are not too hung up on having a modern, luxury style interiors in the apartment.
