We knew that things were going to be difficult when we called the resort ahead of time to request a car pickup and were told on a couple of occasions that the manager is sleeping and to call back. We never did get the pickup and instead used a taxi who had never heard of the resort. The phone number listed on the Agoda booking was also disconnected so we had to rely on the inaccurate location on Google Maps to find it, stopping to ask locals where it was.
On arrival in the taxi, the staff quickly showed us a room at the riverside and then offered us a neighbouring alternative. We selected the alternative and started to unpack, only to be told by the next staff member that we had not booked either of those classes of room and that ours was located "in the garden". We moved to our allocated room which smelled musty and obviously had not been used for a while. it was however nicely furnished and acceptably sized.
The mosquito net around the bed is required and is mostly effective. The bed however had a mouldy mattress covered in an rubberised incontinence sheet (no idea why) which squeaked and wrinkled during the night - a very strange experience.
The bathroom was a good size and mostly clean. The bathroom accessories were of a good quality and replaced daily. The staff will not service the room each day unless asked to do so, "for your privacy".
It ended up with us being the only guests, accompanied by staff numbers ranging up to 9. There is NO WI-FI/internet of any kind even though it clearly says there is on the hotel profile. The one staff member allowed us to borrow a local SIM to get access (as long as we were standing on the roof at the very well maintained swimming pool).
Being the only guests for the entire stay, it was strange that they did not allow us to stay in the room they showed us originally.
Since we were the only guests, the staff sat around waiting for us. When we did order food ahead of time, it was delivered early because the staff were leaving early. Guess is does not matter what the guests actually want.
The location is very quiet and there is nothing to do in the immediate area. The on-river restaurants that are 1.1km away (easy walk) are tourist oriented, expensive and not very exciting, but in the absence of other choices you take what you can get. They advertise having Wi-Fi too but nobody there could connect to anything.
There is a local restaurant 200m south on the other side of the road with the best food in the area and very friendly, quick service.
The check-out process, even though we advised 3 hours ahead, took 50 minutes because the person needing to do it was not there.
Overall the resort has a lot of potential but there are obviously very few guests and the staff do not really know what to do. If they did not sit around all day and performed some much needed maintenance, the please would present a lot closer to the beautiful photos on their public profiles. The tandem bicycle was rusted and unusable, the 2 ATVs were in acceptable conditions (we did use one for 30 minutes within the grounds). There is a multi storey new construction on the grounds which we think will be hotel rooms some time in the future. It looks like the shell has been there a while and is not going anywhere in a hurry.
If the owners took pride in the place, improved the service and did some maintenance then this resort could be good in the future. Being 26km north of Vientiane, over roads that are in very poor condition, makes this place quite remote and not recommended at the moment.
