    “Quiet Repose”

    With more than 2 weeks at hand for visiting our daughter and exploring a bit of Melbourne and surroundings, we needed accommodations nearby to her apartment in the eastern suburbs. We were looking for comfort, peace and quiet, value, and convenient access to roadways and public transportation. We definitely found all of that at the serviced apartments at 105 Walpole Street in Kew. There are only a handful of units, located on this very quiet residential street. The nearest tram stop, many restaurants, and shopping (including a good sized grocery store) were within a 3 minute drive/7 minute walk at the intersection with High Street. Our apartment proved to be a wonderful option, compared with the nearby choices for hotel. Of course, as a serviced apartment, there are important differences. No staff on site. No daily housekeeping. No restaurant. No fitness center. But a wonderful option, nonetheless, first and foremost because of the space. Lots of space! We enjoyed the full living room, a dining area with a table that could seat 6 comfortably, a moderate sized kitchen with a stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, as well as washing machine and dryer, a large master bedroom with a queen size bed (we chose to reserve as a one bedroom unit, but the apartment had availability of a second bedroom with two twin beds), and a large bathroom with a tub and separate walk-in shower. The apartment was very clean. The furnishings were relatively modern and in excellent condition. The full sofa and love seat were perfect for catching World Cup games on the good sized flat screen television. We ate some meals out, but definitely made good use of the kitchen, with its reasonable supply of dishes, utensils, pots, and pans. We rested well in the very comfortable bed. A note on options: wi-fi was available and reliable, but not free. The price was lower than what I'd expect to pay for a weekly or monthly rate at a hotel. Also, towels were replaced weekly, but any housekeeping service beyond that was not free. Parking was free, with spaces for 7 cars (but the access into the car park spaces is a bit narrow --- backing in worked best, but takes a bit of time). What could have made our stay even better? The heater was decidedly noisy and temperamental. It was a challenge to find the sweet spot between too hot and too cold, even in the main space of the living room/dining room/kitchen. And the challenges escalated when it came to trying to keep the bedroom and bathroom at a habitable temperature. Also, the washer and dryer worked reasonably well, but at first you may think a jet has decided to land on your apartment building instead of at the Melbourne Airport, easily besting the noise level of the heater. If you run the heater and the washing machine at the same time, don't bother trying to sleep. If you are looking for an option for an extended stay in the eastern suburbs, I recommend that you take a good look at the apartments at Kew Q105.
