This is a run down apartment building with graffiti all over the walls- reeks of cigarettes, waiting to be condemned. They rent out empty rooms online to unsuspecting travelers then refuse to refund when you see what the place actually is. I feel sorry for the people who live here, and worse for the criminally absent morality of those who profit here.
I don't have time to write a lengthy description of how bad it was but I would have called the cops to escort me if my sister hand not picked me up.
I am a Manager at a NYC hotel (hotel experienced) and it was my first time in California. I was simply scared for my life.
From the pervert that looked at me funny to the walls of this place.
I wouldn't stay here even if they gave me a comp stay!
This is less than a budget hotel.
You can see the prostitutes and drug dealers just roaming around looking.
If you have question please message me.
I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy!
Females traveling, DO NOT!! I repeat, DO NOT stay here!
I am an experienced world traveler and have stayed in all types of accommodations, so this seeming a little sketchy didn't scare me off. But, on arrival, there was no one to check me in, let alone let me into the building. The main tenants here are people living close to the edge or homelessness, paying by the week or by the month. One tenant told me not to stay here, saying that the police are here weekly, and the place has regular drug dealing and prostitution. Looking around the interior of the ground floor, that sounded likely. Across the street is a club, that at 6:30pm on a Sunday was blaring club music. I assume that would go on all night.
Eventually found the guy who would have checked me in, but instead told me they had overbooked and I couldn't stay there. The guy on the couch who had already tried to warn me away, said, "its better, you don't want to stay here." He was right. I moved on. This place was far beyond the boundary of "sketchy."
This was the first place we stayed at on our trip to the USA. The facilities were very old and run down, I wouldn't say it was dirty but definitely not squeaky clean! So luckily we had just travelled for nearly a whole day and just needed a place to stay. I guess for the $18-19 USD it cost per night per person you can't ask for much more. I would stay here again as a budget traveller but not for any great period of time.
One of the main things we noticed was the constant loud COO COO!!! COO COO!!! COO COO!!! noise from the cross walks that is very proper for the streets of oakland. We were chased by a crazy lady to our hotel once, covering our ears and running from her as we made it to the safety of our -2 star hotel. I actually liked it once I cometted the shower floors and got plenty of back-up toilet paper. My said said it was the "crappiest hotel ever." but what does he know, he's six years old. I admit Empyrean towers is as ghetto as ghetto can get but that's part of it's charm. It grows on you while you adapt to it surreal set-up. You are placed in a world of the subconscious and live in a dream state there. It was just as kid friendly in our hotel as it is in the city of oakland. I had a great view and it was nice to be away from tvs, computers and the roughing it in the heart of down town oakland. I'd have to say go there if you are fearless and want to see the streets for how they really are today... but stay away if your a big puss.
