? We stayed for 9 nights at the end of September. I have to say the apartment exceeded our expectations! It was very spacious, with new and comfortable furniture (amazing king size double bed) and air conditioned. Spar was just around the corner and a nice beach a 3 minute walk. Plenty of parking spaces outside. The pool was clean and not busy at all. The reception is open 24/7 so no issues with our late check in. Would definitely recommend this place - good value for money. The village is quiet so recommend hiring a car for travelling around (lots of amazing places within an hour drive).
? Nothing we particularly didn’t like. The only suggestions would be an iron and an ironing board available in the rooms (currently can request at the reception).
Some people were inconsiderately slamming doors very late at night or 6am - could be worth putting signs up saying they should close a door with a key.
We stayed 9 nights in Cecilia, Cala Marcal, in mid September. The weather was so so – rained every other day – but on the whole, it was perfectly fine. We had a one bedroom flat and when we originally booked it via agoda, we requested a higher floor with some sea view if possible (considering we were paying per night same amount we would be paying for a five star hotel it seemed natural). When we arrived we were given a ground floor apartment. When we said that this is not what we requested we were told that 1) they do not read requests or bookings notes from the agents (in this case agoda) and 2) that to be sure we get what we request there is a fee of 70 or so Euro. Again, considering we are paying same amount as for a 5 star hotel this seems a bit like taking the unexpected guest for a ride. The fact that they do not read the messages on the bookings is very poor to say the least. They also expect you to clean the kitchen before you leave or you will pay a fine.
Fortunately, they were able to change us to a top floor, and we ended up having one of the few flats with sea view – did not pay extra for it. By sea view I mean we could see water between two blocks - LOL.
The flat itself was very nice and we were told all apartments in the main Cecilia complex are newly refurbished(some of the studios outside the main complex were not refurbished we were told). I would say this was done to a good standard. The kitchen is sufficient for a small family. The fridge is perfectly fine and the cooker works well. There is kettle, coffee machine, toaster, knives, dishwasher, plates etc. The only complaint is the frying pan – poor. You also get a small kitchen necessity pack – washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc. There is also a nice balcony – unfortunately due to the position of the complex, no sun in the afternoon or evening on the balcony. Bathroom is also modern. The bed in the bedroom was good. Good feeling throughout.
The internet is not very fast, around 4-5 Mbps – sufficient to send emails or play online games. Netflix did not always work.
The bad things: The cleaning or rather lack of it – they do it every 5 days. Again considering the amount we are paying the expectation would be that hey would clean at least every 3 days and not every 5 or more days. You get towels but considering how humid it is they do not dry - by day 3 they start smelling!!! Also, the provided shampoo lasts for only two days and no soap is provided. One roll of toilet paper is also a bit too economic.
The pool area is good, but you are not allowed to jump into the pool or the small lifeguard will have a word with you. The pool bar / restaurant is fine and the drinks were good. Did not try the restaurant so cannot comment on that.
As to parking, there is ample space around the big roundabout that the center of the complex is. It does get crowdy towards the evening. There are also small streets at the back of the complex where you can park if needed. Parking is free.
There is a small Spar (good baguettes) on the way to the beach and the beach itself is just 2-3 min away (sand beach, good snorkeling opportunity) and it is very nice.
Portocolom and Cala Marcal itself are nice but very quiet – this is not a party place, at least not in September. As to restaurants – this is not a place for high expectations. Mediocre back home is considered good here.
As a final word, would I stay here again? Yes, without a doubt – the one bed flats are specious, clean (when you arrive) and comfortable.
Vivement l année prochaine qu on y retourrne
