I stayed in this guest house for a few months in 2010, while working on the West Java earthquake response.
I enjoyed it's simplicity and good location so have been back a few times. Most recently last night.
Though not outstanding in many other ways this is one of the best hotels I have stayed in Indonesia in terms of location. Located on a small shady tree lined back street, the guest house is in an enjoyable area to walk around, in the centre of town with easy access to shop, restaurants etc
The semi retired owner of my guesthouse is a former owner of large hotels who fell on bad times. He has converted what was a very large rich modern house into a guest house by dividing up rooms and extending here and there.
Rooms are equipped with well furnished bathrooms with 5 star fittings. Sadly some if the room fittings such as TV and sheets are now looking a bit old and could do with an upgrade but other than that they are clean neat and more than adequate.
For me the only real disappointment is the breakfast and meals. A bit of a lost opportunity as the house has a lovely kitchen. Breakfast is a very basic backpacker affair. White white bread, reheated fried rice and over stewed coffee.
To the owners credit when I stayed for an extended period he accommodated me by adding fresh chopped fruit, milk and whole meal bread, while I brought muesli from the very good nearby fruit+ shop and made my own good coffee in my room.
Adding a better breakfast and even lunch dinner options would make this a perfect little spot, as it is, it's pretty damn good anyway and the location more than makes up for its shortcomings.
P.s most of the staff have little or no English, though the owner is great.
The hotel has free WIFI but it does not reach all rooms so choose carefully, as nor does phone signal to some.
Rooms vary greatly, large small, multiple beds etc so again choose carefully.
Hi, we stayed in My Family Guest House on 11 / 2011. An average experience but with few problems that you have to take into account if staying there.
- Pretty good location in Bandung, clean, pretty new furniture,
- Biggest problem was with the payments, the staff didn't know how to use card reader properly so we ended up rushing into ATM while trying to catch our train (it was a complete mess). But the biggest problem was that in the end they charged our credit card also twice so we ended up paying the rooms price three times!!!! And suprisingly nobody hasn't reacted our communication attemps after that (have tried it both in english and in Indonesian). SO BEWARE WITH THE PAYMENTS and make them already in the before hand / previous day - don't left it to the morning when you check out.
- Don't stay in the rooms at the ground floor - tobacco smoke gets into rooms (from staff's smoking place?) + the street noise is quite heavy during the whole night. Also one of the rooms downstairs is right next to the front door so you will get several additional knocks during your stay from new hotel quests who are trying to get in.
- For western travellers the english skills of the staff are quite limited (especially night time) - so keep things simple
