Ika Lodge is one of those B&Bs that you are occasionally very lucky to find. It definitely deserves an 'excellent' rating. Margaret and Ken are outstanding hosts and extremely helpful in organising trips or dinner bookings. Margaret was even able to arrange a massage which resolved my wife's hip pain ... the treatment enabled her to complete the Tongariro Crossing (it was still partly closed so it was really a return trip to the Emerald Lakes).
Ika Lodge is down a fairly long drive and is right next to the river. It was so nice to be greeted with a cup of tea and lovely home-made cake on arrival, which we had on the deck. The breakfasts are fabulous ... the home-made rhubarb and apple compote is scrumptious.
We had the Garden Room ... lovely location with a nice corner window seat ... you also have the use of a large and comfortable lounge. The port provided in your room makes a very nice night-cap when returning from dinner.
Complimentary wifi is available with a fairly good speed.
This is the best B & B we have ever stayed in. Margaret and Ken are perfect hosts. We stayed 2 nights to be able to complete the Tongariro Crossing. Ken organised it all for us with early weather forecasts, bus booking, early call and early breakfast, packed lunch etc. The house and rooms are delightful and tea in the garden was a lovely 'extra'. The breakfasts were excellent with freshly baked croissants and salmon omelettes - beautifully presented too. We would recommend this B & B to anyone - its great.
Stayed 2 nights in this outstanding place run by Margaret and Ken who couldn´t do a better job as hosts. Of course breakfasts are excellent, rooms are perfect and surrounding gardens are lovely and quiet- but it´s Margaret´s and Ken´s personality making the difference. They really manage to make you feel like home.
No matter travelling south to Wellington, east to Napier or north to Rotorua- don´t miss this B&B!
Having spent a month travelling NZ including staying at the Wellington Club and Larnach Castle, the breakfasts Margaret provided excelled them all. The room was also always stocked with delicious home made biscuits AND there was a decanter of port!
Margaret and Kenneth were incredibly helpful at short notice in booking transport for the Tongariro Crossing, providing packed lunches for that day and recommending a wonderful lakeside restaurant for dinner.
The room is spotlessly clean, Ika Lodge is in a lovely setting, down a little lane from the road, so no traffic noise and with a beautiful stream a few steps from the back gate. It's really worth walking along the stream/river.
If you're planning on doing the Tongariro Crossing, I recommend staying here.
We had a large modern, clean room, with cookies and tea on arrival, and port with glasses in a small anteroom for use later. The bed is large and comfortable, and the bath and shower are excellent. There is excellent wi-fi, and plenty of room for your laptop at the dining table--if you brought one. Margaret makes an excellent made-to order breakfast, if you are able to eat more after the yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal, toast, croissants, coffee, tea, homemade banana bread, and other delights at the breakfast table.
The recommendation for dinner of a place on Lake Taupo was excellent. We only stayed overnight, but would certainly return if we were ever visiting the area. There is a small fixed charge for use of a credit card, so if you are staying only one night, you might want to bring along some cash to avoid it. This was unexpected, though, and the first time we had encountered it in New Zealand.
