I spent one night at this ryokan while on business due to the lack of availability of other business hotels in Matsumoto city. I was looking forward this traditional Japanese experience. Unfortunately, this ryokan failed to satisfy. To start, the room is super small, like a 7'x11' space plus an equally super small bathroom. I ended up leaving most of my things on the bed.The breakfast and dinner that came with the stay looked fancy, but were very poor quality. The soba noodles were undercooked, for example, and were not edible. The sashimi had no flavor. It did not compare to even airport food at Narita! The worst part of my experience, however, was that I found a dead bug in my bed AFTER I got up in the morning. Another "gotcha" is a 10 a.m. checkout time, which is earlier than all other hotels I have been in in Japan. Almost none of the staff speak English. So you'd better speak some Japanese yourself--which I do--or have a friend who can translate for you. I couldn't be happier when I finally left this place!
A nice ryokan with some western touches. Lovely onsen.
Very spacious and lovely outlook.
However it is a good 20 minutes by bus from Matsumoto station and the bus only comes hourly. Perfect if you've got your own wheels, but a bit frustrating otherwise. The 45 minute walk was a bit much to do routinely.
