We are IHG Gold members, so it clear IHG is our hotel of choice. One of the reasons is because we have never had to worry about our safety since IHG hotels are located in safe areas, with the exception of the one we had made reservations at the Holiday Inn Express at 701 E Hudson St, Columbus, OH 43211 (Fair Grounds, off I-71). We used our GPS to get to the hotel from Easton, and the area this hotel is located is very, very bad - boarded up homes and windows with bars on them. When checking the Lexus/Nexus community crime map for this location (after we realized the area was so bad), it was clear this hotel is located in a very crime ridden area. We called IHG to cancel our reservation we had just made a few hours before, and was told we would have to pay for the first night. I explained we were planning to stay at another Holiday Inn Express (and did - at the Easton location), and wondered if we could just transfer our reservation to the Easton location. We were told we could not do this. I then spoke with Mechelle @ corporate and she assigned a case # and said the hotel manager would call me w/in 24-48 hours to discuss not being charged for the lost night. I never heard from any person from this hotel. This hotel is truly in a bad location and it is surprising IHG even has a hotel there – we did not feel safe staying there. Upon returning home, we spoke with others more familiar with Columbus and they all confirmed the area is an unsafe area. So before you book, check the CommunityCrimeMap.com and enter this hotel’s address and you will see the crimes in this area. Might consider heading to a different IHG hotel.
