    Our first room had many cockroaches then in the second, which we took, we found a cockroach when we were in bed. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. However, after being in the jungle for so long we were happy to have a TV and air con so our one night passed easily. Wouldn't rate the breakfast either. Staff tried to help us but I think over-charged for the airport transport.

    “Brown water, brown towels & cockroaches...”

    I was originally booked into this hotel for three nights but I quickly decided to change the hotel after having some unpleasant experience in the room including getting brown water out of the tab in the sink in the bathroom, seeing cockroaches in the room, and seeing brownish towels. My room had a window but it was a fake window, so the room was basically dark. The room was also not very clean and it made me wonder if the room/bathroom was ever cleaned. Probably due to local water, everything (towel, bedsheets, bed cover, etc) was brownish. Water was also leaking from the shower and the water was never hot but only slightly warm. The staff at the reception was friendly and willing to help but it was difficult to communicate as they did not speak English. The hotel provided breakfast but I could not find anything that I felt like eating. Basically they had whtie toast, white rice, and fried chicken. The hotel also provided free wifi. Will surely not stay here even if I come back to Medan in the future.

    Fortunately we only stated here on two different nights. My impression was that there is an anti-western approach from the staff. The information provided on boookings.com is inaccurate. For one there is a claim that rooms have a minibar. There are no minibars in any rooms. On our first check -in it was quite clear that there was no booking. The fist room we were shown was a so-called deluxe room and was very poorly presented and despite the fact that we had requested a non-smoking room the room reeked. We requested a new room which was provided for an additional fee and for the extra money we gained a sofa and a very noisy and probably never serviced air-conditioner. Both of the rooms had been visited by cleaning staff but whether a lot of cleaning actually took place was questionable. Also both rooms has windows looking into a large reception/convention space. The breakfast was possibly the worst meal we experienced on the entire trip. On our return a week later we were more prepared to confront the desk staff ; this time we were met by two women who had a much friendlier and professional approach to hospitality than the gentlemen who and did receive a better treatment and a slightly better room on the first floor. The is time the shower drain was blocked and the outlet from the hand basin was not connected to the basin. There is obviously a very clear disconnect between what the management of this hotel think they are running and what the staff are actually doing. We were told by our taxi friendly and very helpful taxi-driver from Medan Airport that Medan was not a good place for tourists and our experience at this hotel bears him out. On the other side the location turned out to be quite good with an ATM just down the road at the School, a western gelati shop (expensive but good) next door, some great restaurants on the adjoining main street and a wonderful little gallery.batik store just down the road past the ATM. Also of interest,we took a tuk-tuk back from a restaurant and our rider got lost, finally delievering us to the Grand Kanaya Hotel some distance away. The security staff and concierge there couldn't have been more helpful in arranging a taxi for us and getting us back to the right hotel.
