This resort is owned and personally managed by Royal Thai Pricess Mom Chailai. Her primary goal is to preserve Thai history in the boats and museums at the location. She has done a superb job of this. Her passion for the subject is apparent when she personally guides you through the property. She tells stories of the histories of individual boats and artefacts.
The hotel rooms are in the riverboats, which are moored along the banks of the river. The interior of each boat is decorated differently, beautifully appointed in traditional Thai luxury. This place is hands down my best memory of the 11 times I have visited Thailand.
Admittedly the boats are quaint and well appointed with AC and great bathroom. Location is relaxing. But the staff are a disaster. They did not take care of us. We were recommended by reception to go somewhere for early dinner, but with no real written directions we got lost. Returned in a deluge of thunderstorms to walk get somethign in their restaurant at the recommendation of the reception. 4 of the 8 staff whizzed happily by us (2 wet people) in their shuttle but did not offer us a lift to the restaurant. Tired, wet and hungry we found that the chef had not bothered to turn up. So one of the staff cooked a takeout for us which was adequate but not expertly done (chicken dry and hard) and quite expensive at nearly 900THB incl 2 bottles of Singha. Then the TV refused to work so we called reception to find some Burmese guy speaking broken Thai. Gave up and drank beer. Lousy service for 2000THB.....also dangerous not to have qualified staff on reception overnight. THerefore I cannot recommend this until they have improved their customer service.
I am an expat who has been living in Thailand for 8 years. I have been coming to this resort for over 5 years It is the best of Thailand. It is a place of stunning natural beauty, unbeatable calm and tranquility. It's easy access from Bangkok has made it a refuge to repair frayed nerves, tired body and soul. The facilities are world class with an aesthetically beautiful swimming pool, elegant spa, extremely comfortable rooms, Thai style houses, antiques boats and the most unique of all, floating house. The rooms are pristine, clean and the beds extremely comfortable. The bathroom facilities are state of the art combined with old world charm. At Mom Chailai's, you can absorb Thai history, cutlure, nature , warmth and hospitality. If you want to get some exercise you can row a boat on the tranquil river, pond or walk or cycle amongst exotic trees, flowers and traditional Thai architecture. For an extra special treat of extreme elegance and royal indulgence spend a few nights in a Thai house. The restaurant provides a varied and unique range of Thai dishes suitable for all tastes and even children who are the fussiest of eaters. You can dine in the charm of the antique filled restaurant or one of the gracious boats docked at riverside . If you are lucky enough to meet the gracious hosts, Mom Chailai and Khun Narong you will feel so welcome you will not want to leave! For an unforgettable experience come here!
We went to this resort last year, in May, and we found it really nice, the idea of the boats is very original, and I think the owners are surfing on this wave! Our boat was nice and fairly comfortable, really nice view over the pond. Food was nice, breakfast a little simple for the price of the boat.
We had a very nice dinner on the river at sunset ( price extra), the place is very green and nicely decorated. Staff were ok. We had a little upset over price the first time (not the price given on the phone), they usually don't answer e mails. Better to phone. Only one person speak English well, apart from the owners. We were able to enjoy our stay as we had a car, so we could go to the local floating market,etc... We could also bring our dog, which is quite rare in Thailand. So we really liked it.
BUT, my son went there last week with his girlfriend, when I tried to book by mail I got no answer, I had to phone, and funnily enough, the person I spoke to could not understand my query about "out of season prices" advertised on their site. My son went there, and they tried again to increase the price. He had a small boat, it was apparently quite dusty. Also, none of the services was running : spa " no service", massage "no service", boat trip on the river "no service", transport to local attractions "no service'... my son came home the same evening, as if you are young and there's no service, you get pretty bored there.
I was quite disappointed, it was just after the Thai new year, still during farangs holidays, and nobody really tried to help them. I feel the prices are more related to the original idea than real service.
We booked momchailai from 19.12.2010 for 4 nights... We stayed.at the floating boat with our family. 3 Bedrooms, each with own nice bathroom. I am handicaped, but the staffs helped me with my wheelchair all the time. We also got breakfast served on boat.
Breakfast was ok, but simpel...
